Amanda Ngabirano
Chairperson of the National Physical Planning Board | Uganda
Amanda Ngabirano is the Chairperson of the National Physical Planning Board, the highest body responsible for physical planning in Uganda. She is the former Vice President-Africa of the World Cycling Alliance and is an urban and regional planner. As well as being a lecturing, Amanda has conducted research on informality and transport complexities, road safety, and quality of public space in Kampala, in partnership with several international researchers. Notably, Amanda initiated Kampala’s non-motorised transport pilot concept, which takes the form of the city’s new Namirembe road-Luwum Street. This is a typical example of inclusiveness, whereby walking, cycling, and the quality of public space have been prioritised. Extending beyond her professional capacity, Amanda is also personally passionate about sustainable urban development, with a belief that cycling and walking are the future of mobility in cities.
