WELCOME TO STUTTGART!

In June 2023, the global community of urban shapers will meet in Stuttgart. Despite being known primarily for its industry, we think you’ll be surprised by what Germany’s economic powerhouse has to offer. In 2022, Stuttgart was named Germany’s most sustainable large-scale city by the German Award for Sustainable Cities – and not for no reason.

Home to citizens from 180+ nations, the country’s sixth-largest city is also one of its greenest. Recognised as Germany’s cargo-bike capital, it is also the site of one of the biggest rail expansion projects in Southern Germany since the 19th century. But it’s the city’s reputation for innovation that make it a must-see destination for urban shapers. As well as offering plenty of cultural and artistic highlights, Stuttgart sits at the heart of some of the most exciting changes in the fields of sustainable architecture and construction, transport, digitisation, and more.

FORESTS, PARKS, AGRICULTURE & A RIVER

GREEN AND BLUE STUTTGART

Nature (and urban planners) have been kind to Stuttgart. Almost a quarter of the city is covered by forests, putting it among the most densely forested cities in Europe. In fact, more than 50% of the city is covered by green space, including parks, vineyards, or other agricultural areas. Along with its position on the Neckar river and the city’s 13 mineral springs, Stuttgart’s critical green and blue infrastructure plays an important part in maintaining a high quality of life for its citizens.

NEW DISTRICT

TRANSFORMING STUTTGART

Maybe you’ve already heard of the Stuttgart 21 train station project. However, this is more than just a train station. In fact, it is the biggest expansion project for rail transport in Southern Germany since the 19th century – redefining regional public transport and filling in a missing puzzle piece for one of Europe’s key long-distance rail corridors. With it comes 85 hectares of space for Stuttgart Rosenstein, one of the largest urban re-development projects in Europe and an experimental testing ground for new ways of community living and working.

INTERNATIONAL STUTTGART

As one of the world’s leading industrial centres, Stuttgart depends on migration as an important driver for growth and expertise. This is what makes the city special. Stuttgart’s successful model of collaborative integration – in which people from more than 180 nations live, work, and develop their city together peacefully – is admired worldwide. Even the New York Times has reported on it.

IBA’27: HEADING FOR NEW MODERNISM

FUTURE PROOF STUTTGART

It was in Stuttgart in 1927 that European architects created what would become a blueprint for modern architecture, the world-renowned Weissenhofsiedlung, which remains one of the most referenced urban developments in history. Now, 100 years later, the city is host to the International Building Exhibition (IBA), where a new generation of architects and planners contemplate how cities, villages and settlements can meet the challenges posed by social, technological, and ecological change. The IBA’27 festival 2023 begins.
