My first action as the mayor of my city is…to launch a city development vehicle, that primarily exists to serve the communities of the city and employs sustainable procurement strategies with long term finance. This would involve for instance, borrowing ideas of rent controls from Berlin, community land trusts from Bristol and contract pricing from Vienna. There would be multiple benefits including direct accountability to citizens, long term income (which is reinvested into public services), de-commodifying housing, increasing supply, social equity, avoiding hyper-gentrification and the opportunity to tie in with city infrastructure such as transit.
